Robert Elmer "Bob" Balaban (lahir 16 Agustus 1945) merupakan seorang aktor, penulis, produser dan sutradara Amerika Serikat.[1] Ia merupakan satu dari beberapa produser yang mendapatkan nominasi Film Terbaik Academy Award dalam film Gosford Park (2001), di mana ia juga berperan sebagai aktor di dalam film tersebut. Film Bob Balaban yang lain termasuk Midnight Cowboy (1969), Close Encounters of the Third Kind (1977), Altered States (1980), Waiting for Guffman (1996), Best in Show (2000), A Mighty Wind (2003), For Your Consideration (2006), Lady in the Water (2006), Moonrise Kingdom (2012), The Grand Budapest Hotel (2014) dan Isle of Dogs (2018).
Sebagai sutradara, ia menyutradarai tiga film layar lebar dan beberapa episode serial televisi. Ia juga merupakan seorang penulis buku bacaan anak.
Latar belakang
[sunting | sunting sumber]Bob Balaban lahir dari keluarga Yahudi[2] di Chicago, Illinois, dan merupakan putra dari pasangan Eleanor Pottasch Balaban dan Elmer Balaban, yang memiliki beberapa gedung teater dan kemudian menjadi pelopor televisi kabel.[3][4] Ibunya berperan dengan nama panggung Eleanor Barry.[5]
Pamannya merupakan orang yang dominan dalam bisnis teater. Mereka mendirikan jalur Balaban and Katz Theatre di Chicago, sebuah jalur yang mencakup Chicago Theatre dan Uptown Theatre.[6] Ayahnya, Elmer, dan pamannya, Harry, mendirikan H & E Balaban Corporation di Chicago, yang mengoperasikan istana film-nya sendiri, termasuk Esquire Theatre di Chicago. Mereka kemudian memiliki kelompok stasiun televisi dan televisi kabel yang kuat. Pamannya, Barney Balaban, merupakan presiden Paramount Pictures selama hampir 30 tahun dari tahun 1936-1964.[7] Suami kedua dari neneknya, Sam Katz, merupakan wakil presiden Metro-Goldwyn-Mayer yang dimulai pada tahun 1936. Sam telah menjadi mitra awal dari paman-paman Bob, Abe, Barney, John dan Max dalam mendirikan Balaban and Katz. Sam menjabat sebagai presiden divisi teater Publix Paramount Pictures.[8]
Bob memulai pendidikannya di Universitas Colgate di mana ia bergabung dengan komunitas Phi Kappa Tau, kemudian ia pindah ke Universitas New York. Ia tinggal di Upper West Side, Manhattan bersama keluarganya. Otang tua dari ayahnya beremigrasi dari Rusia ke Chicago, sementara keluarga dari ibunya berasal dari Jerman, Rusia dan Rumania.[4]
Ia menikah dengan Lynn Grossman. Mereka memiliki dua putri, Mariah dan Hazel.[9]
