Sidang Umum Luar Biasa Ketiga Sinode Para Uskup, sinode pertama dari dua sinode yang populer disebut Sinode Keluarga, diadakan di Kota Vatikan pada tanggal 5– 19 Oktober 2014 dengan topik Tantangan Pastoral Keluarga dalam Konteks Evangelisasi.[1][2] Sinode telah diadakan pertemuan 253 uskup dan peserta lainnya dalam persiapan sinode yang lebih besar dengan tema yang sama pada bulan Oktober 2015.[3][4] Para peserta membahas permasalahan yang dihadapi keluarga saat ini, termasuk dampak perang, imigrasi, kekerasan dalam rumah tangga, orientasi seksual, poligami, pernikahan beda agama, hidup bersama, putusnya pernikahan, serta perceraian dan pernikahan kembali.[5] Secara khusus, sinode ini ditandai dengan perdebatan mengenai pelayanan pastoral umat Katolik yang hidup dalam "perkawinan tidak teratur", termasuk mereka yang menikah lagi secara sipil setelah perceraian (khususnya keinginan mereka untuk menerima Ekaristi)[2][4][6] unmarried cohabitating couples,[2][7] dan khususnya umat Katolik gay.[8][9][10] Sinode ini juga terkenal karena menonjolnya para uskup Afrika.[11]
