Richard E. Grant (nama asli Richard Grant Esterhuysen; lahir 5 Mei 1957) adalah aktor Swazi-Inggris, penulis skenario, sutradara dan perfumier.[2] Dia mendapat perhatian publik pada tahun 1987 untuk bermain Withnail dalam film Withnail and I, dan mendapatkan pengakuan sebagai John Seward dalam film 1992 Bram Stoker's Dracula. Baru-baru ini ia bermain Dr. Zander Rice di film superhero 2017 Logan. Dia juga dikenal karena perannya sebagai Izembaro di musim keenam dari serial HBO Game of Thrones.
Kehidupan awal[sunting | sunting sumber]
Grant lahir dengan nama Richard Grant Esterhuysen di Mbabane, Swaziland. Ayahnya, Henrik Esterhuysen,[3][4] merupakan keturunan Belanda-Afrika dan ibunya keturunan Inggris-Jerman.[5][6] Sebagai seorang anak, Grant menempuh pendidikan di St Mark's, sekolah lokal milik pemerintah setempat di Mbabane yang merupakan satu-satunya sekolah yang terdiri dari murid berbagai ras. Ketika berusia sepuluh tahun, Grant menyaksikan ibunya berselingkuh di kursi belakang mobil, dengan sahabat dekat ayahnya, yang tak lama kemudian menyebabkan orang tua mereka bercerai.[7] Kejadian itulah yang membuat Grant terinspirasi untuk selalu menulis catatan harian, yang menjadikan dia intin melakukan sesuatu yang lebih sejak saat itu.[8] Grant mengenakan sebuah jam tangan di setiap pergelangan tangan, satu buah merupakan pemberian ayahnya, diatur dengan waktu Swaziland.[9] Dia memiliki kewarganegaraan ganda, Inggris dan Swaziland.[1]
Grant menempuh pendidikan lanjut di Waterford Kamhlaba United World College of Southern Africa (UWCSA), sekolah mandiri pinggiran Mbabane, di mana dia mendapatkan beasiswa. Grant belajar bahasa English dan drama di University of Cape Town. He menggunakan nama panggung ketika pindah ke Britania saat mulai dewasa dan terdaftar di Equity.[10][11][12][13][14][15][16][17][18]
