Gere menikahi supermodel Cindy Crawford dari 1991 sampai 1995. Mereka bercerai karena Gere diisukan seorang homoseksual.[1][2] Lalu ia menikahi aktris Carey Lowell pada 2002, setelah berkencan beberapa tahun. Mereka dikaruniai seorang putra yang bernama Homer James Jigme Gere, dan lahir tahun 2000, dan dinamai seperti kakeknya.[3]
