Hmm.. menarik juga artikel ini [1] yang saya dapat setelah googling "civitas academica" tidak dapat hasil apa-apa, lalu coba "arti civitas academica" dan muncullah pranala kompasiana tersebut di urutan pertama.

“ Banyak istilah akademik memakai bahasa Latin. Namun, celakanya, banyak pula akademisi yang secara “awut-awutan” menuliskan dan melafalkan frase-frase Latin tsb. Saya hendak menyebutkan beberapa contoh. Mari kita jenguk:

CIVITAS ACADEMICA

Arti idiomatisnya “kelompok/komunitas/warga akademik”. Secara mengejutkan, term civitas academica ternyata hanya dijumpai di kalangan akademisi Indonesia (entah siapa yang mencetuskan pertama kali). Di luar negeri, istilah ini jarang sekali ditemukan. Cek saja di Google “civitas academica”, dengan tanda kutip, maka sebagian besar situs yang muncul berbahasa Indonesia.

Maka, tidak heran, pengejaan (spelling) acap kali keliru. Banyak varian menyesatkan yang jamak kita temukan di surat kabar, flyer, spanduk di dekat gerbang kampus, majalah kampus, dll. Sebut saja, sivitas akademika, sivitas academica, civitas akademika, sivitas academika, dan sebagainya. Intinya, huruf “c” dalam civitas academica sering terpeleset menjadi “s” atau “k”.

Tambahan pula, pelafalan (pronunciation) juga sering tak keruan. Civitas academica seharusnya berbunyi /civitas akadémika/, dan bukan /sivitas akadèmika/. Di sini pun saya tidak menambahkan notasi untuk membedakan mana huruf yang pelafalannya panjang atau pendek, sebab telinga kita tidak terlatih membedakan kuantitas suara. Yang jelas, huruf “c” dalam bahasa Latin tidak pernah berbunyi /s/.

Lalu, apakah makna civitas academica?

civitas [dari kata civitas, civitatis]

• kelas kata = nomina
• deklinasi = 3
• kasus = nominatif
• genus = feminin
• numerus = singularis
• makna harfiah = kota

academica [dari kata academicus-a-um]

• kelas kata = adjektiva
• deklinasi = 1 dan 2
• kasus = nominatif
• genus = feminin
• numerus = singularis
• makna harfiah = akademik
