William Hubbard Baxter III (lahir 3 Maret 1949) adalah ahli bahasa berkebangsaan Amerika Serikat yang dikenal merekonstruksi bahasa Tionghoa Kuno.

Kehidupan[sunting | sunting sumber]

Baxter meraih gelar doktor (Ph.D.) di bidang linguistik pada tahun 1977 di Universitas Cornell. Pada tahun 1983, dia mulai bekerja di Universitas Michigan,[1] yang kemudian menjadi Profesor Linguistik dan Bahasa dan Budaya Asia.

Karya Baxter berjudul A Handbook of Old Chinese Phonology (arti: "Buku Pegangan Fonologi Tionghoa Kuno")[2] merupakan acuan baku untuk merekonstruksi fonologi bahasa Tionghoa Kuno. Bersama dengan Laurent Sagart di Pusat Penelitian Ilmiah Nasional Prancis di Paris, mereka telah menerbitkan dan mengembangkan penelitian rekonstruksi bahasa berdasarkan pengucapan, kosakata, dan morfologi bahasa Tionghoa Kuno.[3] Sebuah rekonstruksi untuk hampir 5000 kata telah diterbitkan secara daring.[4] Pada tahun 2016, Baxter dan Sagart dianugerahi Penghargaan Buku Leonard Bloomfield (Leonard Bloomfield Book Award) oleh Masyarakat Linguistik Amerika karena karya mereka berjudul Old Chinese: A New Reconstruction.[5]
