Bahasa Skots Awal ialah bahasa kesusastraan yang muncul di bagian berbahasa Inggris Pertengahan Utara, Skotlandia pada tempo sebelum 1450. Bentuk bahasa Inggris Pertengahan Utara diturunkan dari bahasa Inggris Kuno Northumbria. Selama tempo ini, para penutur menyebut bahasa tersebut sebagai "English" (Inglis, Ynglis, dan variannya).
Contoh awal seperti The Brus Barbour dan Babad Wyntoun dijelaskan dengan lebih baik sebagai bagian bahasa Inggris Pertengahan Utara daripada sebagai pendahulu bahasa Skots nantinya, nama yang pertama kali digunakan untuk menerangkan bahasa tersebut pada tempo bahasa Skots Pertengahan nantinya.
