Percy Tyrone Sledge (November 25, 1940 – April 14, 2015) adalah seorang Afrikaa Amerika R&B, soul, gospel, dan traditional pop singer. dia dikenal atas lagunya yang berjudul "When a Man Loves a Woman", dan masuk dalam jajaran nomor satu Billboard Hot 100 dan tangga lagu R&B tahun 1966. Ia memperoleh pencetakan rekor lagu yang paling banyak dibeli, yaitu dengan adalnya Gold-certified dari RIAA.
Ia sebelumnya bekerja di rumah sakit pada tahun 1960, ia mencapai puncak kariernya tahun 1960-an dan pada tahun 1970-an dangan seri lagu emosi jiwa (soul music). [sunting | sunting sumber]Sledge lahir pada 25 November 1940 di Leighton, Alabama.[1][2] dia bekerja sebagai petani di Leighton sebelum bekerja di rumah sakit Colbert County kota Sheffield, Alabama.Pertengahan 1960-an, ia melakukan tur Southeast dengan Esquires Combo pada liburan,[3] ketika liburan sebagai pekerja rumah sakit.Ia lalu mengikuti audisi, dan Sledge mendapat kontrak dari Perusahaan Rekaman.[4]
Suara jiwa dari Sledge begitu sempurna dari seri musik ballads yamg diproduksi oleh Ivy dan Marlin Greene, yang beralianrock kritik Dave Marshmenyebutnya "emosi klasik untuk keromantisan segala umur". "When a Man Loves a Woman" adalah musik yang pertama saat pertama kali Sledge mendapat kontrak, yang dirilis pada tahun 1966.
