Ini adalah daftar genre musik rok yang terdiri dari subgenre musik populer yang berakar pada rock and roll tahun 1940-an dan 1950-an, dan berkembang menjadi identitas tersendiri sebagai musik rok di tahun 1960-an, terutama di Amerika Serikat dan Inggris.[1] Pada akhir 1960-an, sejumlah subgenre musik rok yang dapat diidentifikasi telah muncul, termasuk hibrida seperti blues rock, folk rock, country rock, dan jazz-rock fusion,[2] banyak di antaranya berkontribusi pada pengembangan rok psikedelis yang dipengaruhi oleh kontra-budaya psikedelis.[3] Genre baru yang muncul dari adegan ini termasuk rok progresif, yang memperluas elemen artistik;[4] glam rock, yang menonjolkan kecakapan memainkan pertunjukan dan gaya visual;[5] dan subgenre utama heavy metal yang beragam dan bertahan lama, yang menekankan volume, kekuatan, dan kecepatan.[6] Pada paruh kedua tahun 1970-an, punk rock diintensifkan dan bereaksi terhadap beberapa tren ini untuk menghasilkan bentuk musik yang mentah dan energik yang dicirikan oleh kritik politik dan sosial yang terbuka.[7] Punk adalah pengaruh ke tahun 1980-an pada perkembangan selanjutnya dari subgenre lain, termasuk new wave, post-punk dan akhirnya gerakan rok alternatif.
