Penyanyi-penulis lagu Woody Guthrie muncul dari kubangan debu Oklahoma dan Depresi Hebat pada pertengahan abad ke-20, dengan lirik yang mencakup pandangannya tentang ekologi, kemiskinan, dan serikat pekerja, dipadukan dengan melodi yang mencerminkan banyak genre musik rakyat Amerika.

Kebangkitan musik folk Amerika dimulai pada tahun 1940an dan mencapai puncak popularitasnya pada pertengahan tahun 1960an. Akarnya sudah ada sebelumnya, dan artis seperti Josh White, Burl Ives, Woody Guthrie, Lead Belly, Big Bill Broonzy, Richard Dyer-Bennet, Oscar Brand, Jean Ritchie, John Jacob Niles, Susan Reed, Paul Robeson, Bessie Smith, Ma Rainey dan Cisco Houston menikmati popularitas umum yang terbatas pada tahun 1930an dan 1940an. Kebangkitan ini mengedepankan gaya musik folk Amerika yang pada masa lalu berkontribusi pada perkembangan musik country dan western, blues, jazz, dan rock and roll .
