Iran dan Amerika Serikat tak memiliki hubungan diplomatik resmi sejak April 1980. Pakistan bertugas sebagai negara pelindung Iran di Amerika Serikat, sementara Swiss bertugas sebagai negara pelindung Amerika Serikat di Iran. Kontak dilakukan melalui Seksi Kepentingan Iran dari Kedubes Pakistan di Washington, D.C.,[1] dan Seksi Kepentingan AS dari Kedubes Swiss di Tehran.[2] Pada Agustus 2018, Pemimpin Tertinggi Iran Ali Khamenei mencekal pembicaraan langsung dengan Amerika Serikat.[3]
