Brian Brett (28 April 1950 – 17 Januari 2024) adalah seorang penyair, jurnalis, editor, dan novelis Kanada.[1] Dia telah menulis dan menerbitkan sejak akhir tahun 1960-an, dan dia telah bekerja sebagai editor di beberapa perusahaan penerbitan, termasuk Blackfish Press yang memenangkan Penghargaan Gubernur Jenderal. Dia juga menulis memoar tiga bagian tentang hidupnya di British Columbia.
Masa muda[sunting | sunting sumber]
Brett lahir di British Columbia . Ia tumbuh dengan kelainan endokrin langka, sindrom Kallmann, yang mencegah tubuhnya memasuki masa pubertas ; dia kemudian menulis memoar tentang pengaruh hal ini terhadap hidupnya.[2] Brett kuliah di Universitas Simon Fraser antara tahun 1969 dan 1974, mempelajari sastra.

Brett mulai menulis pada tahun 1960-an. Pada awal tahun 1970-an, dia bekerja sebagai jurnalis lepas dan kritikus untuk The Globe and Mail, Toronto Star, Vancouver Sun, The New Reader, Books in Canada, dan Victoria Times-Colonist . Dia adalah kritikus puisi dan kolumnis untuk The Province di Vancouver. Dia juga menulis artikel untuk banyak surat kabar lain di Kanada, dan esainya muncul di banyak majalah. Selama sepuluh tahun dia menulis kolom surat kabar bulanan bernama CultureWatch untuk Yukon News .
Brett meresmikan program BC Poetry-in-the-Schools, yang selama beberapa tahun memperkenalkan siswa pada puisi dunia. Dia telah menyelenggarakan banyak lokakarya menulis di Kanada.

Pada Mei 2005, Brett menjadi ketua Persatuan Penulis Kanada.[3]
Pada tahun 2004 Brett menerbitkan buku, Uproar's Your Only Music, tentang perjuangannya melawan sindrom Kallmann.
Pada November 2009, Brett memenangkan Penghargaan Non-Fiksi Kepercayaan Penulis Kanada untuk Trauma Farm: Sejarah Pemberontak Kehidupan Pedesaan . Buku ini menggambarkan kehidupan sehari-hari di pertaniannya, dengan wawasan tentang sejarah alam pertanian.[4][5]
Pada tahun 2016, Writers' Trust of Canada menganugerahkan Brett Matt Cohen Lifetime Award untuk menghormati karyanya.[6]

Brett tinggal di pertaniannya di Salt Spring Island, British Columbia.[7] Dia mengonsumsi testosteron untuk mengurangi efek sindrom Kallmann, yang meliputi nyeri dan osteoperosis.
