Bernard Sellato yang dilahirkan pada tahun 1951[1] menyandang gelar master geologi dari ENSG (École Nationale Supérieure de Géologie) di Nancy (Prancis) dan gelar doktor antropologi dari EHESS (École des Hautes Études en Sciences Sociales) di Paris, Prancis. Ia tinggal bertahun-tahun di Kalimantan untuk menelaah sejarah, bahasa, dan kebudayaan.[2]

Setelah kunjungannya yang pertama ke Borneo dalam tahun 1973-75, selama bertahun-tahun Sellato menjelajah dengan sampan dan berjalan kaki sambil meneliti bahasa dan antropologi di antara masyarakat hutan pengembara dan petani tebas dan bakar di hutan Pegunungan Muller dan di beberapa daerah di Kalimantan. Dia diadopsi oleh satu keluarga Aoheng dan diberi julukan Suling Dirung.[3]

Pada tahun 1988, Bernard Sellato ditugaskan oleh sebuah perusahaan minyak, Elf Aquitaine, untuk menulis buku seni (coffee-table art book) tentang Borneo, yang menghabiskan waktu setahun untuk penelitian dan penulisan – hasilnya adalah buku dwibahasa bergambar “Hornbill and Dragon” yang terbit pada 1989,[4] yang edisi keduanya terbit pada tahun 1992. Buku hasil edisinya yang terbaru, “Plaited Arts from the Borneo Rainforest”, dengan sponsor Total E&P Indonésie, diterbitkan pada tahun 2012.[5]

Selain menulis sendiri enam buku, Sellato juga menjadi editor dan ko-editor enam buku lagi dan menyumbangkan sejumlah artikel tentang Borneo untuk beberapa buku dan jurnal. Ia adalah mantan direktur Institut Riset Asia Tenggara /the Institute for Research on Southeast Asia, (CNRS dan Universite de Provence) di Marseilles, Prancis dan menjadi penyunting jurnal dwibahasa "Moussons: Social Science Research on Southeast Asia" dari 1999 sampai 2008.[6]

Sellato adalah seorang ahli yang dihormati dalam bidangnya – menurut review oleh Simon Strickland tentang Innermost Borneo: Studies in Dayak cultures (2002) dalam the Journal of the Royal Anthropological Institute, penelitian Sellato memberikan sumbangan yang sangat berarti tentang suku pengembara Borneo, walaupun etnografi dan sejarah mereka sangat rumit.[7] Pada tahun 2004, Bernard Sellato mendapat anugerah the Borneo Research Council Medal untuk sumbangannya yang sangat berharga kepada penelitian tentang masyarakat dan kebudayaan Borneo selama 30 tahun.[8]
