Dalam ekologi, biomassa adalah massa organisme biologis hidup di suatu area atau ekosistem pada suatu waktu tertentu. Biomassa pada ekologi dapat mengacu pada biomassa spesies, yang merupakan massa dari satu atau lebih spesies, atau biomassa komunitas yang merupakan massa dari seluruh spesies pada suatu komunitas. Massa dapat mencakup mikroorganisme, tumbuhan, dan hewan hidup.[4] Nilai massa ini dapat diekspresikan sebagai massa rata-rata per unit luas, atau total massa dari suatu komunitas.
Bagaimana biomassa diukur bergantung pada mengapa biomassa tersebut diukur. Terkadang biomassa dipertimbangkan sebagai massa alami dari suatu organisme pada kawasan tersebut (in situ) sebagaimana mestinya. Seperti contoh pada perikanan salmon, biomassa salmon dapat dikatakan sebagai total berat salmon yang terukur ketika salmon diangkat dari air. Pada konteks lain, biomassa dapat diukur sebagai massa organik kering, sehingga hanya 30% dari total berat sebenarnya yang mungkin, dan sisanya adalah air. Untuk tujuan lain, hanya jaringan biologis hidup yang dihitung sehingga tulang, gigi, dan cangkang tidak termasuk.
Pada aplikasi yang lebih sepit, biomassa diukur sebagai massa dari karbon yang terikat secara organik yang ada pada makhluk hidup. Terlepa dari keberadaan bakteri, total biomassa hidup yang ada di bumi diperkirakan mencapai 560 miliar ton karbon,[1] dengan total produksi primer dari biomassa hanya sekitar 100 miliar ton karbon per tahun.[5] Namun total biomassa bakteri mungkin melebihi nilai tersebut.[6][7]
Piramida ekologi
Piramida ekologis adalah penggambaran yang meunjukan hubungan antara biomassa dan tingkatan trofik pada suatu ekosistem.
- Piramida biomassa adalah piramida yang menunjukan jumlah biomassa pada tingkatan trofik.
- Piramida produktivitas adalah piramida yang menunjukan produksi atau pemindahan biomassa pada tingkatan trofik.
Dasar dari sebuah piramida merupakan produsen primer (organisme autotrof). Produsen primer mengambil energi dari lingkungan dalam bentuk cahaya matahari atau bahan kimia anorganik dan menggunakannya untuk membuat molekul kaya energi seperti karbohidrat. Mekanisme ini disebut dengan produksi primer. Piramida lalu bergerak melalui berbagai tingkatan trofik menuju predator tingkat tinggi.
Ketika energi dipindahkan dari satu tingkatan trofik ke tingkatan berikutnya, umumnya hanya sepuluh persen yang digunakan untuk membangun biomassa baru. Sisanya yang berupa 90% menuju proses metabolik dan dilepaskan sebagai panas. Energi yang hilang ini berarti produktivitas piramida tidak pernah terbalik dan umumnya membatasi rantai makanan hanya sampai enam tingkat. Namun di lautan, piramodai biomassa dapat terbalik sebagian atau seluruhnya dengan jumlah biomassa yang lebih banyak pada tingkatan yang lebih tinggi.
Biomassa daratan
Biomassa daratan umumnya dicirikan dengan semakin berkurangnya biomassa seiring dengan pergerakan menuju tingkatan trofik yang lebih tinggi. Organisme autotrof yang berperan sebagai produsen seperti rerumputan, pohon, dan semak memiliki biomassa yang lebih tinggi dibandingkan organisme heterotrof seperti rusa, zebra, dan serangga yang memakan mereka. Tingkatan dengan kadar biomassa terendah adalah predator tertinggi dalam rantai makanan seperti singa dan elang.
Di padang rumput subtropis, rerumputan menjadi produsen utama pada dasar piramida ekologi. Lalu mereka dikonsumsi herbivora seperti belalang dan bison, diikuti konsumen kedua seperti tikus yang memakan belalang, dan singa yang memakan bison. Singa dalam hal ini menduduki posisi predator tertinggi, namun tikus tidak karena masih memiliki kemungkinan untuk dimakan oleh predator yang lebih tinggi seperti ular. Dan ular lalu dimakan oleh elang.
Biomassa lautan
Biomassa lautan berbeda dengan biomassa daratan. Biomassa lautan dapat meningkat seiring dengan pergerakannya menuju tingkatan trofik yang lebih tinggi. Hal ini disebabkan produsen utama lautan yang berupa fitoplankton berukuran sangat kecil dan mampu tumbuh dan berkembangbiak dengan cepat. Berbeda dengan produsen di daratan yang tumbuh dan berkembang biak relatif lebih lambat.
Di lautan, rantai makanan umumnya dimulai dengan fitoplankton dan mengikuti pola sebagai berikut:
Fitoplankton → zooplankton → zooplankton predator → hewan penyaring → ikan predator
Fitoplankton adalah produsen primer pada tingkat rantai makanan terendah. Fitoplankton melakukan fotosintesis untuk mengubah karbon anorganik menjadi protoplasma. Mereka lalu dikonsumsi oleh hewan mikroskopik yang disebut dengan zooplankton.
Biomassa bakteri
Terdapat 40 juta sel bakteri pada satu gram tanah, dan jutaan sel bakteri dalam satu mililiter air tawar. Sehingga kesemuanya diperkirakan terdapat 5×1030 (5 nonilion) bakteri di bumi dengan total biomassa setara dengan biomassa total tanaman.[8] Beberapa peneliti percaya bahwa total biomassa mungkin melebihi total biomassa gabungan tanaman dan hewan.[6][7]
Biomassa global
Perkiraan untuk total biomassa global dari suatu spesies dan kelompok spesies tidak konsisten di berbagai publikasi ilmiah. Terpisah dari bakteria, total biomassa global diperkirakan sekitar 560 miliar ton karbon.[1] Sebagian besar biomassa ini ditemukan di daratan, dengan hanya 5 hingga 10 miliar ton karbon ditemukan di lautan.[1] Di daratan, terdapat sekitar 1000 kali biomassa tanaman autotrof dibandingkan biomassa hewan. Sekitar 18% dari nilai ini merupakan biomassa yang dimakan oleh hewan.[9] Namun di lautan, total biomassa hewan dapat mencapai sekitar 30 kali lebih besar dibandingkan biomassa autotrof.[10] Kebanyakan biomassa autotrof lautan dimakan oleh hewan laut.[9]

Manusia mencakup 100 juta ton biomassa kering yang ada di bumi, hewan domestikasi mencakup 700 juta ton, dan tanaman pertanian mencapai 2 miliar ton. Hewan yang paling sukses dalam hal biomassa kemungkinan adalah Krill antartika, Euphausia superba, dengan biomassa basah mencapai 500 juta ton.[22][25][26] Namun sebagai sebuah kelompok, crustacea akuatik copepod dapat menjadi hewan dengan biomassa terbesar di bumi.[27] Sebuah karya ilmiah yang diterbitkan oleh jurnal Science memperkirakan untuk pertama kalinya total biomassa ikan dunia yang berada di antara 0.8-0.2 miliar ton.[28][29] Telah diperkirakan bahwa sekitar 1% biomassa global adalah fitoplankton,[30] dan 25% adalah fungi.[31][32]
