English: Though not as well known as Mount St. Helens or Mount Pinatubo, Mexico's El Chichón had a series of eruptions in the spring of 1982, one of which can be seen in this image from NOAA's GOES satellite. Though smaller than Pinatubo's major eruption in 1991, El Chichón's eruption still had impacts on global climate. At Hawaii's Mauna Loa Observatory, the El Chichón eruption reduced the amount of the Sun's solar radiation reaching the observatory more than Pinatubo did. What's more, particulate matter from the eruption was still detected in the Arctic's stratosphere a year after the eruption.
