English: Photo of Cyrus B. Lower, which was published on p. 2 of his 1899 book, "We Rode with Little Phil and Other Poems." Lower, a native of Lawrence County, Pennsylvania who was awarded the U.S. Medal of Honor in 1887 for his gallantry during and after the Battle of the Wilderness in Virginia in May 1864, was twice wounded in combat. Shot in the hand while fighting as a private with the 23rd Ohio Infantry near Antietam on September 18, 1862, he was then shot in the thigh on May 7 while fighting with Company K of the the 13th Pennsylvania Reserve Regiment (also known as the "Bucktails" or 42nd Pennsylvania Infantry). Continuing to serve with his regiment, he was captured by Confederate troops on May 30, but escaped on June 13 by jumping from the train which was transporting him to the CSA prison camp at Andersonville, Georgia. After successfully connecting with his regiment in northern, Virginia, he continued to serve until mustering out on June 28, 1865.
