Istilah australopithecine secara umum merujuk kepada semua spesies yang berkerabat dengan genera Australopithecus dan Paranthropus. Mereka juga mengikutkan anggota dari Kenyanthropus [2], Ardipithecus [2], dan Praeanthropus [3]. Istilah ini diambil dari klasifikasi sebelumnya sebagai anggota dari subkeluarga berbeda, yaitu Australopithecinae. [4] Mereka sekarang diklasifikasikan oleh beberapa ahli dalam subsuku Australopithecina dari suku Hominini. Australopithecines berkembang pada era Plio-Pleistocene, dan mereka bipedal dan bentuk giginya mirip dengan manusia, tetapi dengan ukuran otak yang tidak lebih besar dari kera modern, dengan sedikit encephalization daripada genus Homo. [8] Manusia (genus Homo) mungkin turunan dari leluhur australopithecine, sementara genus Ardipithecus kemungkinanan leluhur dari australopithecines. [7]

Karakteristik Fisik [sunting]
Australopithecines beradaptasi terhadap lokomosi bipedal, mereka memiliki indeks brakial yang tinggi (rasio lengan bahwa/lengan atas) bila dibandingkan dengan hominid lainnya, dan mereka memperlihatkan dimorfisme seksual lebih besar daripada anggota Homo atau Pan tapi lebih sedikit daripada Gorila atau Pongo. Diperkirakan rata-rata tinggi mereka yaitu 12–1,5 ms (39–4,9 kaki) dan berat sekitar 30 and 55 kilograms (66 hingga 120 lb). Ukuran otak antara 350 cc to 600 cc. Gigi taring belakang secara relatif besar, dan memiliki enamel lebih dibandingkan dengan kera dan manusia, sementara gigi seri dan gigi taring relatif kecil, dan perbedaan gigi taringnya sedikit antara jantan dan betina dibandingkan dengan kera.[7]
