Sosiologi medis melibatkan analisis sosiologi terhadap organisasi dan institusi medis; pembuatan pengetahuan dan pemilihan metodde, tindakan dan interaksi pakar kesehatan, dan dampak sosial atau budaya dari suatu praktik medis. Bidang ini lebih berinteraksi dengan sosiologi pengetahuan, studi ilmu dan teknologi, dan epistemologi sosial. Sosiolog medis juga tertarik pada hal-hal yang dialami pasien secara kualitatif, biasanya bekerja di bidang kesehatan masyarakat, pekerjaan sosial, demografi dan gerontologi untuk mendalami fenomena di persimpangan ilmu sosial dan klinis. Disparitas kesehatan secara umum berkaitan dengan kategori umum seperti kelas dan ras. Hasil penelitian sosiologi objektif dengan cepat menjadi sebuah masalah normatif dan politik.
