Pendirian Roma

Serigala Kapitolia, patung serigala betina menyusui saudara kembar Romulus dan Remus, citra paling terkenal yang dikaitkan dengan pendirian Roma. Menurut Livy, patung tersebut dibuat pada 296 SM.

Pendirian Roma' adalah sebuah peristiwa atau proses prasejarah yang kemudian banyak diterima oleh sejarawan dan penyair Romawi. Bukti arkeologi menunjukkan bahwa Roma dikembangkan dari persatuan bertahap dari beberapa desa puncak bukit pada Zaman perunggu Akhir atau Zaman Besi Awal. Hunian prasejarah dari Semenanjung Italia timbul pada 48.000 tahun lampau, dengan kawasan Roma dihuni pada sekitar 1600 SM. Beberapa bukti di Bukit Kapitolia diyakini berasal dari awal ca 1700 SM dan Forum Romawi kemudian didirikan di lembah terdekat yang mengembangkan nekropolis pada setidaknya 1000 SM. Perpaduan pemukiman puncak bukit menjadi entitas tunggal pada akhir abad ke-8 SM mungkin dipengaruhi oleh tren pembentukan negara-kota yang timbul dari Yunani kuno.
