Suku Nebatean adalah pendiri kota Petra. Suku ini memiliki kerajaan sendiri yang disebut Nebate dengan menjadikan Petra sebagai ibu kotanya (±200 SM-105 M).

Suku Nebatean dikenal sebagai keturunan Ismail bin Ibrahim. Nama Nebate berasal dari nama putra sulung Ismail, yaitu Nebayod. (Lihat Kejadian 25 : 13).

Nabi 'Isa A.S (Yesus) diduga melarikan diri dan membawa pengikutnya ke Petra setelah Yahudi menolak ajarannya dan berusaha membunuhnya. (Lihat Injil Matius 16 : 18). Penemuan Death Sea Scroll di dekat Laut Mati menjadi bukti pendukungnya.
