James Porter Moreland (lahir 9 Maret 1948), lebih dikenal sebagai J. P. Moreland, adalah seorang filsuf, teolog dan apologet Kristen asal Amerika Serikat. Ia menjabat sebagai "Distinguished Professor of Philosophy" pada Talbot School of Theology, Biola University di La Mirada, California, Amerika Serikat.

Moreland berspesialisasi di bidang metafisik, filsafat pikiran, kimia,[1] dan filsafat Kristen, dengan karya-karya yang diterbitkan di jurnal-jurnal seperti Metaphilosophy dan American Philosophical Quarterly. Ia juga menerbitkan karyanya melalui penerbit-penerbit Intervarsity Press, NavPress, Zondervan, Oxford University Press, Routledge, Rutgers University Press, dan Prometheus.[2]

Moreland meraih gelar Bachelor of Science di bidang Kimia dengan penghargaan dari University of Missouri dan Master of Arts dalam bidang Filsafat dengan penghargaan tertinggi dari University of California at Riverside. Ia meraih gelar Th.M. dalam bidang Teologi dari Dallas Theological Seminary.[3] Pada tahun 1985, ia meraih gelar Ph.D. dalam bidang filsafat dari University of Southern California. Disertasinya berjudul "Universals and the Qualities of Things: A defense of Realism." Penasihat disertasinya adalah profesor Kristen terkenal Dallas Willard.[4] Moreland menikah dengan Hope dan mereka dikaruniai dua anak serta empat cucu.

Moreland mengajar pada Talbot School of Theology, Biola University di La Mirada, California.[5] Ia merupakan anggota Board of Advisors bagi "Center on Culture and Civil Society" pada Independent Institute.[6] Ia menjabat selama 8 tahun sebagai bioethicist pada PersonaCare Nursing Homes, Inc. di Baltimore, Maryland.[7]

Ia telah berdebat dengan Clancy Martin mengenai keberadaan Allah.[8] Ia juga berdebat dengan ateis Eddie Tabash mengenai keberadaan hal-hal di supranatural.

Pandangan[sunting | sunting sumber]

Moreland menganut aliran substance dualism,[9] dan juga membela libertarian free will,[10] as well as life after death.[11] Moreland juga membela keberadaan malaikat dan setan, berargumen bahwa ia tahu mereka ada baik karena doktrin Kristen dan pengalaman pribadi.[12] Ia mendukung teori penciptaan bumi tua, dan merupakan kritikus aliran fideisme.[13]
