Ekuinoks terjadi dua kali setahun (sekitar 20 Maret dan 22 September) ketika sumbu Bumi tidak terinklinasi terhadap Matahari, dan pusat Matahari berada di bidang yang sama dengan khatulistiwa Bumi. Istilah ekuinoks dapat pula digunakan untuk arti yang lebih luas, yaitu tanggal saat peristiwa semacam ini terjadi.
Nama "ekuinoks" berasal dari bahasa Latin aequus (yang berarti sama) dan nox (yang bermakna malam), karena selama ekuinoks, panjang siang dan malam sama.
