Ailee lahir di [[Denver]], [[Colorado]] pada tanggal 30 Mei 1989 dan dibesarkan di [[New Jersey]]. Ia sekolah di Scotch Plains Fanwood High School dan Pace University dimana ia mempelajari peradilan pidana, namun harus mengambil cuti untuk mengejar karir musiknya.<ref name="YMC Entertainment Official Website"/> Ia mulai dikenal sejak ia membuat saluran [[YouTube]] sendiri bernama "aileemusic". Amy Lee (Nama Korea: Lee Yejin; Hangul: 이예진; Hanja: 李藝真, lahir 30 Mei 1989) atau lebih dikenal dengan nama panggung Ailee (Hangul: 에일리 adalah seorang penyanyi Korea-Amerika dibawah label rekaman Korea Selatan, YMC Entertainment.[1] Ia merilis singel pertamanya, Heaven, pada tanggal 8 Februari 2012.[2]

Latar Belakang

Ailee lahir di Denver, Colorado pada tanggal 30 Mei 1989 dan dibesarkan di New Jersey. Ia sekolah di Scotch Plains Fanwood High School dan Pace University dimana ia mempelajari peradilan pidana, namun harus mengambil cuti untuk mengejar karir musiknya.[1] Ia mulai dikenal sejak ia membuat saluran YouTube sendiri bernama "aileemusic". Pada tahun 2010 ia pindah ke Korea Selatan untuk lebih mendalami musik.

Pra-debut

Sebelum debut K-popnya, Ailee adalah seorang seniman dibawah label Muzo Entertainment, sebuah agensi independen berbasis di New York dan New Jersey, dimana ia berkolaborasi bersama beberapa artis seperti JohnnyPhlo serta rapper Dechiper.

Selama hari-hari pelatihannya dibawah YMC Entertainment, ia tampil dalam lagu Wheesung berjudul "They Are Coming" yang dirilis pada tanggal 9 Oktober 2011.[3] Ailee juga muncul dalam lagu Decipher, "Catch Me If You Can".

Pada 13 September 2011, Ailee bersama Wheesung tampil pada episode khusus Chuseok "Singer and Trainee" di stasiun MBC. Kehadiran Ailee di panggung langsung dirasakan oleh penonton yang merasa kagum karena ia tampil seperti penyanyi profesional, meskipun ia belum memulai debutnya secara resmi. Setelah penampilan solonya menyanyikan lagu "Halo" oleh Beyonce, penyanyi BMK menyatakan, "Kemana pun ia pergi, ia memiliki potensi untuk menjadi bintang besar." Setelah para juri telah menilai semua orang, Ailee memenangkan tempat pertama.[4]

Pada 30 Januari 2012 Ailee membuat debut aktingnya dalam Dream High Season 2 sebagai Ailee, salah satu anggota grup K-pop, HershE.[5][6]

2012: Debut

Pada tanggal 6 Februari 2012, teaser video musik untuk lagu debut Ailee, Heaven, dirilis. Heaven ditulis dan diproduksi oleh Wheesung.[7] Dan pada 9 Februari 2012, Ailee merilis lagu dan video musik untuk lagunya tersebut[8][9] yang menampilkan Gi Kwang dari grup musik Beast.[10] Kemudian Ailee melakukan debut panggung untuk "Heaven" di M! Countdown M.net pada tanggal 9 Februari 2012 [11] dan di SBS Inkigayo pada tanggal 11 Februari.[12] Hanya satu bulan setelah debut, ia mendominasi Penghargaan Musik Cyworld pada bulan Februari dan memenangkan dua penghargaan untuk “Song of the Month” serta “Rookie of the Month“. Cyworld Digital Music Awards berdasarkan pada Tangga Musik Cyworld dan pemenangnya ditentukan dari artis atau grup dengan penjualan tertinggi setiap bulannya. [13]

Pada 22 Februari 2012, ia merilis lagu soundtrack "Superstar" untuk Dream High Season 2 bersama dengan Hyorin Sistar dan Jiyeon T-ara.[14]

Pada bulan Maret, Ailee membuat penampilan pertamanya dalam acara Immortal Song 2 di KBS dengan menyanyikan lagu tahun 1967 dari Patti Kim berjudul “Light and Shadow”.[15] Pada episode 19 Mei spesial ‘Park Jin-young', Ailee menampilkan lagu debut Park Jin-young berjudul “Don’t Leave Me“. Ia mengalahkan Lee Haeri Davichi dengan selisih 1 poin, 418 dan 419 untuk Ailee.[16] Kemudian pada episode 30 Juni, Immortal Song 2 menampilkan komposer Yoon Il Sang. Ailee menyanyikan lagu "Fate" dari Lee Seung Chul dan kembali menang dengan 402 suara.[17] Pada bulan Agustus, diumumkan bahwa untuk sementara Ailee akan meninggalkan acara tersebut karena ingin fokus untuk album mendatangnya yang dijadwalkan akan dirilis pada bulan Oktober. Namun terdapat kemungkinan ia akan kembali ke Immortal Song 2. [18] Ia melakukan pentas terakhirnya pada 6 Agustus dan episode tersebut disiarkan pada 1 September.[19]

Ailee bersama dengan Han Seok Joon membawakan ABU Radio Song Festival 2012 pertama di KBS Concert Hall, Seoul, Korea Selatan pada 11 Oktober 2012.[20][21]

Pada 16 Oktober, Ailee merilis video musik untuk singel album mininya, “I’ll Show You“ yang menampilkan G.O MBLAQ. Selain video musik, ia juga merilis album mini berjudul 'Invitation'.[22] Album mini tersebut berisi 6 lagu.[23] Album ini diproduksi oleh beberapa produser seperti Kim Do Hoon, Lee Hyun Seung, Park Guentae, Double Sidekick, Wheesung, dan menampilkan beberapa artis seperti Verbal Jint, Swings dan Simon D.[24] Pada 18 Oktober, Ailee kembali dengan membawakan "I'll Show You"" di M! Countdown. [25]
