CHAPTER XV.ANOTHER HAMMERSTEIN VENTURE. The Manhattan Opera House, situated on the north side of Thirty-fourth street, between Eighth and Ninth avenues, was erected by Oscar Hammerstein at a cost of $2,000,000, 1906 and opened December 3, 1905, with a performance ofI Puritani, with Bonci in the tenor role- This eifortwas undoubtedly Hammersteins biggest achievement, and thoughfor several years it was run in opposition to the MetropolitanOpera House as a home of grand opera, it was not a financialsuccess and at the close of the 1909-10 season Hammerstein soldhis interests to the Metropolitan Company, agreeing not to pro-duce opera again in New York. For a time the house shelteredvaudeville, though recently dramatic offerings, chiefly those play-ing return engagements, have appeared here. A fact rather amus-ing in connection with the building of the Manhattan OperaHouse is that the details of construction were arranged and car-ried out by Mr. Hammerstein on the steps and in the lobby of
