His advancement was steady. Made Vicar-General in 1891, domestic prelate of PopeLeo XIII in 1892, auxiliary bishop of NewYork in 1895, he finally succeded ArchbishopCorrigan in 1902 as ruler of the metropolitansee, the most important in the Western world,with its one thousand priests, its three hun-dred educational and charitable institutions,and its Catholic population of one and a quar-ter millions.
