Saya pernah dengar bahwa jika suatu masyarakat mengunakan sistem garis ketutunan matrilineal dan patrilineal sekaligus, maka hal itu dinamakan bilateral. Hal ini jadi menarik karena Suku Minangkabau kemungkinan menggunakan kedua sitem matrilineal dan parilineal sekaligus.
