OpenMoko adalah proyek yang bertujuan untuk smartphone pertama di dunia yang menggunakan filosofi sumber terbuka. OpenMoko menggunakan OpenEmbedded sistem untuk mengcompile applikasi dan ipkg sebagai sistem distribusi untuk applikasi.

Software

OpenMoko menggunakan Linux kernel versi 2.6.20.5 dengan X.Org Server versi 7.1, Matchbox window manager, GTK+ versi 2.6.10, dan and Evolution Data Server.

Hardware

Hardware pertama untuk OpenMoko akan mempergunakan GSM Neo1973 dari FIC. Versi untuk applikasi developer akan bisa diperoleh April 2007 dengan harga $350 (atau sekitar Rp 3,2 juta). Versi untuk publik akan dilancurkan sekitar 11 September 2007. Neo1973 mempergunakan distribusi Linux yang sudah dioptimasi untuk mobil telepon.

Neo mendapatkan nama dari bapak mobil telepon dan tahun mobil telepon pertama dilancurkan:

“	"Neo" means new. Dr. Marty Cooper (the inventor of the mobile phone) made the first call ever in 1973. We believe that an open source mobile phone can revolutionize, once again, the world of communication. This will be the New 1973.	”

Dalam tahun 2007, developer-developer fase 0 ("phase 0 developer") menerima hardware-hardware pertama.
